In theory, I totally get that accessories can make (or break!) an outfit. Need to dress up a basic weekend outfit? Add a stunning statement necklace. Want to add interest to a boring work ensemble? Earrings and a colorful bracelet easily do the trick. In practice, however, finding the right accessories can be hard if your jewelry box is sparse and your budget's limited. While cute trinkets can certainly be found at thrift and consignment shops (like this $10 necklace from my last post), they can be harder to unearth than clothing, and it can take some time to amass a real stockpile. As a result, adding to my modest jewelry collection has become a mild obsession.
Because of this obsession, I was super excited to attend a party at BaubleBar's new pop-up jewelry shop in SoHo last week. My party 'fit consisted of a print dress ($20, scored at the Ladakh sample sale), plus jewelry from a small boutique in Jackson Heights, Queens (around $15 for earrings and necklace). With shoes ($15), the head-to-toe look came to roughly $50.
Normally an online-only retailer, BaubleBar specializes in super-trendy earrings, rings, necklaces and bracelets, all offered at what the company calls a "guilt-free" price point. Although my thrift-trained eye balked at a few of the prices, most of BaubleBar's merchandise fit squarely into my budget, especially with the help of a $10 credit gifted to us party goers. Instead, the toughest part was narrowing down my choices, since the huge, loft-like shop was filled with tons of jewelry and enough options to fit every taste. After wandering indecisively around the space for about an hour, I finally settled on these simple Lucite Cactus Flower Drops (purchased for $16, reg. price $26).
If you're interested in checking out the BaubleBar pop-up, the store is open at 131 Greene Street through August 13. Or, if online browsing is more your style, the site offers both free shipping and free returns, making it dangerously easy to impulse shop.
